Elk Grove, CA — Today marks the eighteenth anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act. After reauthorizations in 2000 and 2005, a strengthened version passed the Senate this spring with bipartisan support but is stalled in the House.

Dr. Ami Bera offered the following comment: 

"Domestic violence is simply intolerable, regardless of age, creed, gender, orientation, nationality, or anything else. This should be common sense. It is unconscionable for extremists in Congress to reject a lifesaving bill with bipartisan support and instead insist on watering down the Violence Against Women Act. An issue this serious cannot be subject to fringe ideology or partisan games—this is further proof of the disturbing radicalization taking place within the Republican Party. We need compassionate leadership that will put people before politics."

Elk Grove, CA — On August 22nd, Congressman Dan Lungren spoke at an Information Security Roundtable. While explaining his role as chairman of the Committee on House Administration, Lungren revealed his enthusiasm for the kind of Washington politics that many voters have come to disdain.

"Congressman Lungren chairs a committee that is supposed make Congress work. While he had no time to create jobs and balance the budget, he did have time to drop everything to get a Member of Congress' window cleaned. He claimed his position is like being 'Mayor of Capital Hill' and bragged about the IOU's he would get from other members of Congress. But for all the perks and backroom deals Congressman Lungren brags about, he has done nothing for the people of Sacramento County."

ELK GROVE, CA - On Sunday, Rep. Todd Akin made extremely offensive remarks that clarify the warped reasoning behind HR 3, a bill that he co-sponsored with Congressman Lungren that sought to redefine rape as “forceful” rape.

“As a husband and the father of a young woman, I am outraged by these disturbing and offensive remarks.

I join both President Obama and Gov. Romney in their condemnation. I call upon Congressman Lungren to denounce Rep. Akin’s appalling comments.

Further, I call upon Congressman Lungren to renounce the bill he co-sponsored with Rep. Akin, which attempted to limit women’s health care options by redefining rape as "forcible" rape.

ELK GROVE, CALIFORNIA - Yesterday 7 people were killed and 3 left injured after a gunman opened fire at the Sikh Community Temple in Oak Creek Wisconsin.

ELK GROVE - In a step towards restoring transparency to our elections, the FEC is expanding donor disclosure requirements for groups running “issue ads” in compliance with their Circuit Court defeat in Van Hollen v FEC. Although this is a step in the right direction, it does not alter the system of “independent expenditures” that allows outside groups to directly call for a candidate’s election or defeat. This has prompted groups like Crossroads GPS, Americans for Prosperity, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to alter—not end—their strategy of anonymous attacks.

Dr. Ami Bera offered the following comment:

“While the FEC’s decision is a step forward, we must do more to restore integrity, accountability, and transparency to our elections. Unless Congress acts, anonymous attacks will continue to flood the airwaves and distort the democratic process. Today, I’m calling upon Congressman Lungren to cease his blockade of the DISCLOSE act and allow this important bill a hearing in the Committee that he chairs.”
