ELK GROVE, CALIFORNIA – The Bera for Congress campaign unveiled its fundraising totals in advance of the first filing period of 2012. Bera raised $366,000, with a cash on hand total of $1,147,873. Dr. Bera is running in California’s new 7th Congressional District, setting up a highly anticipated rematch with Republican Congressman Dan Lungren. Throughout the election cycle, Dr. Bera has raised nearly $1.5 million. Perhaps most impressive, Bera recruited over 1,200 new donors this quarter, with over 60% of Q1 donors donating to the campaign for the first time ever. Through the end of 2011, Dr. Bera had outraised the embattled Lungren ten consecutive fundraising quarters in a row.
“I am humbled by the outpouring of support for my candidacy. Dan Lungren and Congressional Republicans are out of touch. As Dan Lungren fights to privatize Medicare and limit womens’ rights, hundreds of new supporters have answered the call for true leadership. These past few months prove the voters want to elect a doctor who will fight for real solutions instead of playing politics with Medicare and womens’ health.”
In 2010, Congressman Lungren was re-elected with only 50.1% of the vote in a district with a 13,400 Republican registration advantage. The new district lines add over 16,000 new Democratic voters, and is a district that both President Obama and Governor Jerry Brown won by 5%. Both the Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg Political Report list CA-07 as a pure toss up race. Building on the momentum of an extremely close 2010 contest against Rep. Dan Lungren, it’s anticipated that the rematch will be one of the top races in the 2012 cycle.
Dr. Bera is a lifelong Californian. He and his wife Janine and their daughter reside in Elk Grove.
