ELK GROVE, CALIFORNIA – On January 31, the final day of the fourth quarter reporting period, Congressman Dan Lungren released underwhelming fundraising numbers, yet again outraised by up-and-coming challenger Dr. Ami Bera.

In one year, Bera has raised $1,103,157, with a cash-on-hand total of $918,873.  Dr. Bera holds nearly twice as much cash-on-hand as Congressman Lungren, who has spent all but $521,205 of what he raised.  Dr. Bera is running in California’s new 7th Congressional District, setting up a highly anticipated rematch with Republican Congressman Dan Lungren who raised $178,607 in the fourth quarter of 2011.  In the last three months Bera raised $256,326.  Through the end of 2011, Dr. Bera outraised the embattled Lungren ten consecutive fundraising quarters in a row.

“I am humbled by the outpouring of support for my candidacy.  Dan Lungren and Congressional Republicans are out of touch.  As Chief Medical Officer for Sacramento County, I worked across party lines to balance the budget, create jobs, and worked with local business to make sure their employees had access to quality health care at an affordable rate.  The support we have built these past few months proves the voters want someone with real world experience to face our nation’s challenges.”

In 2010, Congressman Lungren was re-elected with only 50.1% of the vote in a district with a 13,400 Republican registration advantage.  The new district lines lose approximately 25,000 Republican voters creating a 7% Democratic Performance increase from the previous change. Both President Obama and Governor Jerry Brown won CA-7 by 5%.  Both the Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg Political Report list CA-07 as a pure toss up race and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has already named the race to the ‘Red to Blue’ program.  Building on the momentum of an extremely close 2010 contest against Rep. Dan Lungren, it is anticipated that the rematch will be one of the top races in the 2012 cycle.

Dr. Bera is a lifelong Californian. He and his wife Janine and their daughter reside in Elk Grove.
