Congressman reiterates support for Social Security privatization in live radio debate…then he lies. Again.
ELK GROVE, CA -- Today, Dan Lungren showed a callous disregard for the facts as he continued to lie to voters about his plan to privatize Social Security.
In a live radio debate between Dr. Ami Bera and Dan Lungren, the Congressman reiterated his plans to privatize Social Security, and then challenged Dr. Bera to find one instance where he declared support for privatization, stating, “I would challenge Dr. Bera to give one instance of where I’ve ever said I would privatize Social Security, it does not exist.”

Last week Dan Lungren lied to a group of senior citizens about his plan to privatize Social Security. At a campaign event at the Eskaton retirement community in Carmichael, Dan Lungren was asked by a senior citizen about his support for privatizing Social Security. Instead of being honest with seniors about his past support for privatization, Lungren lied to the seniors and tried to mislead them.
“Career politicians like Dan Lungren have no problem telling a bald-faced lie to a room full of senior citizens,” said Lucinda Guinn, Bera for Congress campaign manager. "Lungren lying to distort his own record is politics at its worst."
- Dan Lungren previously told the Sacramento Bee that he “favors allowing private investment of Social Security contributions and would invest his own contributions if he could.” (Sacramento Bee, 10/17/04)
- Lungren also told the San Francisco Chronicle “You have to show people what it is you’re talking about, my explanation of personal accounts is that these are the only true lockboxes that will prohibit me and other members of Congress from getting our grubby hands on it. That seems to resonate with people.” (San Francisco Chronicle, 3/04/05)
Dr. Ami Bera has taken a pledge to prevent privatization of Social Security and will protect Social Security for current and future recipients. “We cannot allow career politicians who have been bought off by Wall Street to hand our retirement savings over to the same banks who brought us the brink of economic collapse,” said Bera. “If we followed Dan Lungren and George Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security, we would have millions of seniors in poverty after the market collapse.”
“This is a classic case of flip flopping from a typical career politician,” said Lucinda Guinn, Bera for Congress campaign manager. “Dan Lungren will do anything to win reelection -- saying one thing and doing another. Northern California deserves better.”
