ELK GROVE, CALIFORNIA –  Dr. Ami Bera (CA-7) announced today that he earned a place on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s highly prestigious Red-to-Blue program.  Having recently announced raising over $1.1 million in the year 2011, Dr. Bera is extremely well positioned to unseat career politician Congressman Dan Lungren.  Dr. Bera is one of three candidates in California named to Red-to-Blue and one of only 18 named nationwide.

“I am humbled by the support I’ve received from hard-working families all across Sacramento, who know I stand strong for the forgotten middle class,” said Ami Bera. “Being named to the Red to Blue program is a testament to the tremendous momentum we have gained together.”

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel offered the following comment:

“Ami Bera is working every day to hold Congressman Lungren accountable for his failed record of voting to end Medicare and blocking a middle class payroll tax cut. Ami’s stellar fundraising numbers and solid campaign make him one of our top candidates. As a doctor, Ami will bring a commonsense problem-solving approach to Congress, rather than the crass partisanship of Dan Lungren.”

The DCCC’s Red to Blue program highlights top Democratic campaigns across the country, and offers them financial, communications, grassroots, and strategic support. The program will introduce Democratic supporters to new, competitive candidates in order to help expand the fundraising base for these campaigns.

In 2010, Congressman Lungren was re-elected with only 50.1% of the vote in a district with a 13,400 Republican registration advantage.  The new district lines add over 16,000  new Democratic voters, and is a district that both President Obama and Governor Jerry Brown won by 5%.  Both the Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg Political Report list CA-07 as a pure toss up race.  Building on the momentum of an extremely close 2010 contest against Rep. Dan Lungren, it’s anticipated that the rematch will be one of the top races in the 2012 cycle.

Dr. Bera is a lifelong Californian. He and his wife Janine and their daughter reside in Elk Grove.
